The rate of residential mortgage foreclosures in New Hampshire is stable, remaining among the lowest in the nation, according to a new report.

While Illinois had the country’s highest foreclosure rate, New Hampshire ranked 38th, according to the August 2022 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report prepared by ATTOM, a curator of real estate data nationwide for land and property data.

ATTOM’s measure comes from foreclosure filings — default notices, scheduled auctions or bank repossessions.

In August, New Hampshire had a foreclosure rate of 1 in every 7,605 homes. In Illinois, which led the nation, the foreclosure rate was 1 in every 1,926 homes.

Government assistance programs during the Covid-19 pandemic helped stave off bankruptcies. Now that those programs have come to an end, foreclosures are returning to pre-pandemic levels, according to ATTOM.

New Hampshire’s ranking at 38 is the same ranking it had when ATTOM released its last foreclosure survey in July. According to the ATTOM data, New Hampshire’s rate of foreclosure is 5 percent higher than it was in July and 162.5 percent higher than it was in August 2021.

Behind Illinois, Delaware had a rate of 1 in every 2,387 housing units; South Carolina was 1 in every 2,417 housing units; New Jersey was 1 in every 2,441 housing units; and Florida was 1 in every 2,950 housing units.

Neighbor Vermont had the lowest rate of foreclosure — 1 in every 111,439 residences.
