Dr. Howard Mitz, a gastroenterologist, is now seeing patients in Plymouth. With decades of experience treating digestive disorders, Mitz will offer his expertise to the greater Plymouth area.

“I am excited to partner with Speare and to bring more than 30 years of gastroenterology experience to help treat the Speare community,” said Mitz.

Board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine, Mitz earned his medical degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then completed his advanced fellowship training in gastroenterology at the Chicago Osteopathic Medical Center.

Gastroenterologists focus on digestive system diseases and disorders of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver.

One area of particular interest to Mitz is inflammatory bowel disease, a condition that involves chronic inflammation of the GI tract.

“I have a passion for helping patients who have inflammatory bowel disease,” said Mitz.

IBD is the most common GI disease, which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Crohn’s disease causes the intestinal tract to swell and sometimes cause pain. It can affect any part of the GI tract. Ulcerative colitis is inflammation of the innermost lining of the large intestine. IBD inflammation can cause bleeding and sores that result in pain. Symptoms include diarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss. While IBD is a mild illness for some people, others experience it as a debilitating condition with life-threatening complications.

“I see many patients with IBD and other digestive issues, and we are able to help them manage their disease,” said Mitz. “I am looking forward to providing the same care at Speare.”

Mitz is accepting new patients and can be reached at Speare Primary Care, 603-536-1881.
