Energy costs, weather contributing factors

Black Mountain ski resort will not open for the 2023-24 winter season, according to a Facebook post made by the Fichera family on Oct. 11.

“Due to circumstances beyond our control, including soaring energy costs, unpredictable weather, extreme staffing shortages throughout the region, and many other challenges, we have made the very difficult decision to cease operations,” read the family’s statement.

The ski resort was originally opened in 1935, with the Fichera family taking ownership in 1995. Over the years, the resort grew to cover over 140 acres, with five lifts and 45 trails.

The owners’ announcement also mentions that season passes already purchased for this upcoming season will be reimbursed.

“To all of our past and present team members, all season pass holders and guests, extended family and friends, thank you for your support over the years, we will miss you,” the family’s statement continues.

“Thank you for being the true spirit of skiing and keeping the dream alive.”
