Fabrizia Spirits — the Salem-based company known for producing its limoncello and other liqueurs since 2008 — now has its own lemon grove in Sicily, Italy.

The grove will be used to grow lemons in an ideal environment then shipped directly to their operations in New Hampshire, maintaining proper quality control of their product along the way.

“These lemons are grown in a perfect microclimate in southeastern Sicily near Europe’s largest active volcano, Mt. Etna. The rich volcanic soil and warm winds from the Mediterranean Sea produce the most fragrant lemons in the world,” said Phil Mastroianni, co-owner and co-founder of the company alongside his brother, Nick. “We now control the fruit from orchard to bottle, and can ensure the highest quality finished product.”

The brothers said the company, with its partner Gruppo Villari, is able to hand-pick, clean and ship lemons to the U.S., where employees at their manufacturing facility in Salem can use the zest to infuse pure alcohol, producing a bright, fragrant limoncello. The remainder of the lemon is then used in their canned cocktails.

“Considering our humble beginnings, peeling lemons in the garage of our parents’ home, this is a monumental achievement for the company,” said Phil Mastorianni. — AMANDA ANDREWS
