
1. John T. Broderick Jr., senior director of external affairs at Dartmouth-Hitchcock and former chief justice of the NH Supreme Court, gave a keynote address in August at the Opening Business Session of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ Annual Convention in Atlanta, Ga. As an advocate for D-H’s R.E.A.C.T. Mental Health Awareness Campaign, he discussed the steps to take when observing signs of emotional suffering and mental illness, and encouraged attendees to raise awareness about the importance of treatment.
2. Manchester Little League received a check for $66,962 from participating in 10 days of charitable gaming at the Filotimo Casino Sports Bar & Restaurant. The money will help the League purchase equipment, make upgrades to fields and expand their footprint in the Greater Manchester community to help even more children get involved with baseball.
3. Wood & Clay, a Gilford-based company that specializes in custom home construction and renovations in the Lakes Region, purchased $50,000 in New Hampshire business tax credits to redevelop the Gale School in Belmont. The project will transform the historic schoolhouse, originally built in 1894, into a community facility that will include a new program center for Lakes Region Community Services on the second floor. 4. The NH Business Finance Authority has approved a $1 million loan for AHEAD Qtr., Inc. to improve and expand Friendship House in Bethlehem, an addiction and recovery center, soon to be renamed New Hampshire Detox, which provides treatment for substance use disorders in the North Country. Renovations will include facility upgrades to increase capacity to 44 beds. 5. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, D-NH, joined Captain Carey Pantling (in uniform), commanding officer at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, David Costello of Rising Tide Associates (far left) and Nashua Mayor Jim Donchess (right) at Granite State Manufacturing’s ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the expansion of its Nashua facility. GSM systems play an important role in the construction, operations and maintenance of the U.S. Navy’s submarine fleet, and its expanded facility will help create new jobs in the area and strengthen New Hampshire’s role in support of America’s national defense.
6. Spaulding Academy & Family Services has unveiled the Shaker House, a new building in Northfield that will accommodate its community-based programs’ families and staff, including foster care licensing workers, clinicians, case managers and family aides. When staff members are not on the road visiting the children and families they support, the Shaker House provides a private meeting space for supervised family visits and additional office space for employees. All of the construction and renovation work was completed by the Spaulding facilities team.
