Hi-yo Silver State
While Dave Scanlan and the NH FITN contingent checks out rival states to ensure NH’s primary goes Numero Uno — and Granite Staters hear almost daily about their efforts, whether they want to or not — you might wonder whether it’s that bigga deal elsewhere.
Sure, Iowa pols, like NH’s, are addicted to the FITN attention. But what about the others?
Let’s look at one of them, Nevada — which is supposed to have a Dem primary and, perhaps, a GOP caucus (it’s a long, crazy story. It has a little bit more on its plate than tailing politicos prancing around looking for votes).
In fact, between 1/9/24 and 2/11/24 the good people of the Silver State (and its many, many visitors of course) will be treated to not one, not two, not three big distractions from their daily lives. There’ll be four in those 33 days.
First on the agenda will be a trade show. Not just any trade show, but THE trade show, the CES consumer electronics trade show, where attendance annually comes in at well over 100k people as well as 4k media types.
Then you have your Dem primary and, maybe, a GOP caucus (which the NevGOP is suing to hold, ostensibly to make sure Dems and independents can’t vote for their nominee) on 2/6/24.
Three pretty big deals — and imagine the media coverage, huh? Well, here’s a prediction: They will all pale in comparison, even if any candidate with a name other than Trump wins the Nev. GOP caucus.
That’s because Event No. 4 will be Super Bowl LIX, a sporting event you may have heard of. It’s going to be held on 2/11/24.
Good luck to the prez candidates trying to get Nev. voters’ attention.
“Let me tell you something: My family appreciates the fact I’m not on that list.”
— Ex-Trump minion Corey Lewandowski after being asked for comment about the list of 18 people who were indicted along with Trump on racketeering charges related to the Ga. prez election results.
A view from the top
It’s pretty hard to avoid the guv’s well-publicized, seemingly daily, opinions on the GOP prez race. He’s a cable/Sunday gabfest staple at this point, and even the Old Gray Lady, aka the NY Times, ran an op-ed piece on the very subject by our guv (“If Republicans Narrow the Field, We Will Beat Trump”). But that’s not the only thoughts re: politics that he’s been sharing with his fan base.
Why just th’other day, as a guest on Jack Heath’s radio show, the guv weighed in on a race that even most Dem voters aren’t thinking about at this point: the party’s budding guv primary between Manch Mayor Joyce Craig and Exec Councilor Cinde Warmington.
Turns out the guv was almost fulsome in his opinions on CW, who he called “formidable.” Why? Because she’s “smart and does her homework.”
Warmington: Racking up a big endorsement?
It also turns out he’s not a fan of JC, whose “policies have been a disaster” — although, in typical guv fashion, he began his assessment of JC with the required statement, “I love Manchester. It’s a great city, but …”
All of which raises the question: Does the guv’s praise for CW hurt or do absolutely nothing for her in a Dem primary?
And a second question: Does the guv’s bloviating on the Dem primary mean that he senses JC might be the stronger candidate in a general election?
And a third question: In the end, will anyone care?
“Her name is, her name is … um … Let me see, I forget which one this is. I’ve been dating a lot of people.”
— Mark Brave, the Stafford County sheriff forced to be placed on leave after being charged with using county funds to travel and carry on multiple extramarital affairs, responds to an AG investigators question, according to an affidavit. He’s married, BTW — at least as of this writing.
The clock is ticking …
If the current GOP guv can heap praise on a Dem guv candidate, then it must be only a matter of time before and e-guv (John Lynch) starts telling us how great Kelly Ayotte is, the woman he reappointed as AG, much to the chagrin of Dems, back in ‘05.
Ayotte and Lynch: Best buds?
And it was during that term when she really raised her profile, trying an infamous capital punishment case, personally appeal a ruling against a state abortion-related parental notification law before the US Supremes, etc. And she cashed in that raised profile in 2010 for a term in the US Senate.
MAKING THE ROUNDS
In case you were wondering, RFK Jr. is still seeking the Dem prez nod, even though he’s hired GOP state rep Aidan Arkenberg — a former deputy GOP whip, mind you — to work on his primary campaign. Must be some of his outside-of-the-box thinking
What are the odds that the decision to pull the plug on Burgess BioPower subsidies motivates North Country voters in ’24?
Still waiting for even a peep from GOP prez candidates about the ludicrous weather NH has been enduring, let alone the rest of the world.
Say it ain’t so Vivek: Two ex-employees have filed separate law suits against the GOP prez wannabe charging he and his Strive Asset Management co-founder aggressively pressured them to violate securities laws. How’s that for anti-woke?
Yes, Marianne Williamson is still running for the Dem prez nod, too.
