5TH ANNUAL NORWAY POND SYMPOSIUM

WHEN: Saturday, June 3, 9 a.m. – noon

WHERE: Harris Center for Conservation Education, 83 Kings Highway, Hancock

WHAT: Enjoy a morning of presentations highlighting recent research on the past, present and future ecology of Hancock’s Norway Pond. Dr. Amanda McQuaid of UNH will present her findings on cyanobacteria toxins in sediments that have accumulated over the historical past. Sara Steiner, program coordinator for the NHDES Volunteer Lake Assessment Program (VLAP), will share an ecological status report based on 17 years of water-quality data collected at Norway Pond by longtime VLAP volunteer Dick Warner. Finally, Dr. Kate Hastings, manager of the NHDES Cyanobacteria Harmful Algal Bloom Program, will offer a glimpse of what the future might hold. A workshop will follow from 1 to 3 p.m. (registration is required and space is limited).

DISCOVER THE SECRET SAUCE: SMALL BUSINESSES THRIVING IN PORTSMOUTH

WHAT: Produced by the Chamber Collaborative of Greater Portsmouth, this interactive event will feature leaders from the small business community and the business resources that support them. SBA New England Regional Administrator Mike Vlacich and Mayor Deaglan McEachern will kick off the event, followed by two panels: “Unleashing the Entrepreneurial Spirit,” a panel of Portsmouth-based business owners that will discuss why they choose Portsmouth and the benefits of doing business in the Port City; and a business resource panel, where attendees can meet local business advisors and mentors that provide individualized guidance and training opportunities to area businesses and some of the local clients they serve.

WHAT: Hosted by the NH Center for Nonprofits, NH Gives is the state’s largest day of giving, bringing together hundreds of nonprofits and tens of thousands of donors to raise as much money and awareness as possible for the causes served by New Hampshire’s nonprofit sector. This 24-hour event is designed for Granite Staters to give back to the nonprofits that give so much to our communities every day. Our panelists will dive into topics and businesses practices that mirror the needs of today’s workforce and the challenges new business leaders face in New Hampshire’s business community. Attendees will have the chance to participate in discussions of how future business leaders can engage with New Hampshire’s economic climate to make the Granite State a more welcoming place to conduct business and succeed. Panelists include: Jodie Nazaka, Director of the Manchester Economic Development Office; Marlana Trombley, managing director of Orbit Group brands and chief of staff at Orbit Group; and Amanda Schoenberg, owner and chief clinical officer at A.B.A. Behavioral Consulting.

ELLIOT HEALTH SYSTEM WALK FOR HOPE

WHEN: Sunday, June 11, 8 a.m. – noon

WHERE: SNHU Campus, 2500 North River Rd., Manchester

WHAT: The Walk for Hope raises funds for necessary programs at the Solinsky Center for Cancer Care at the Elliot that offer resources for education, nutrition, transportation and mental health. The Patient and Family Nurse Navigator Program also helps with understanding care options, scheduling and billing support and assistance with patient advocacy. The Walk for Hope’s route is 3.1 miles (5k), circling the SNHU campus twice, so plan for a minimum of one hour to complete the walk, and stay until noon for fun activities. The event will take place regardless of weather.

COST: $10 adults; free for cancer survivors and children under 12

FARMSTEADS OF NEW ENGLAND 15TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

WHAT: Enjoy a day on the links while supporting Farmsteads’ mission of empowering adults with autism and other developmental disabilities to live meaningful and satisfying lives.
